Overview

Gallagher Bassett seeks a versatile, accomplished lawyer with at least five to seven years of experience in a law firm or corporate legal department. Preferred candidates will have litigation experience in state and federal courts, with experience in commercial disputes, insurance coverage, bad faith litigation, professional liability defense, contract interpretation, and regulatory law. The candidate will benefit from experience with various types of insurance coverage. Experience with complex personal injury, construction disputes or internal investigations would be notable but not required. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, strong analytical ability, proven organizational ability, work well within a team, and be a self-starter.

The role will report to GB’s Associate General Counsel and join a small team of attorneys and professionals led by GB’s General Counsel.

GB can accommodate a hybrid/in-office schedule. The position will be located at GB’s and Gallagher’s corporate headquarters in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

How you'll make an impact

  • Proactively and efficiently handle litigated and non-litigated disputes arising from GB’s claim administration and consulting operations, including active management of outside counsel.
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and defend professional liability demands and related disputes.
  • Handle and respond to subpoenas for documents and testimony.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys.
  • Advise stakeholders on legal exposure arising from disputes and provide proactive legal advice to mitigate risk in connection with GB’s operations.
  • Provide legal counsel to GB business units on a variety of topics outside the context of a dispute, and pertinent to GB’s operations and continued growth.
  • Serve as a key business and legal partner by virtue of technical legal competence, strong communication skills, excellent judgment, and ability to develop relationships. The role interfaces with employees and management at all levels.

About You

Required:

  • Law degree and 7 years related experience required.

Preferred:

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and license to practice law under the bar of any state that enables admission to practice as in-house counsel in Illinois.

  • At least 5-7 years of proven experience in a law firm or corporate setting.
